Stay Powered: Finding An Adapter For Your PC

PC notebooks and netbooks have the advantage of being able to carry a charge, unlike their desktop counterparts. How long the charge lasts will depend on how much you use the device and the type of battery. With continuous use, however, the charger gets worn out and may ultimately stop functioning. When this happens, you can always get a replacement. Here is what you should look into when getting one for your Asus Eee PC:

What are the types of power adapters?

The two common types of power adapters are the AC and DC adapters. While they look quite similar and may even have similar outputs and inputs, they function differently. There are also universal adapters, also referred to as travel adapters.

  • AC adapter - The alternating current here means that the electric current reverses direction in a circuit at regular time periods. This period is measured in hertz (cycles per second). The adapter has a transformer that transforms the voltage from the main line to a lower voltage. It also has a rectifier that converts the AC power to DC power used by the PC. The charger comes enclosed in a case, usually plastic. Such adapters are commonly used in homes.
  • DC adapter - This, on the other hand, is a charger where the electric current flows in only one direction constantly and without any interruption. There is, therefore, no change from positive to negative poles. Sources of DC power include cars, in-flight outlets, batteries, and solar panels.
  • Universal power adapters - This is another option for charging your PC. The chargers are designed to work on any laptop. They feature several connector types that enable you to plug your device into international outlets.

What should you consider when getting an AC adapter?

The last thing you want is to buy an adapter that will either refuse to work or that will damage your computer. Before purchasing the AC adapter charger, there are several things to consider in order to get a compatible one. These include the following:

  • Model number - Laptops and other PCs will usually have their model numbers printed on a sticker affixed to the underside. This number should assist you in choosing a matching adapter.
  • Voltage and amperage - The AC adapter you buy is designed to accept a certain AC input from the wall outlet and convert it to a DC output, which the PC then accepts. The idea is to get an adapter whose output voltage and current matches the DC input values of the device. These values are also indicated on the device.
  • Connector type - The adapter should also be physically compatible with your device. The common types of connectors are the cylindrical, snap and lock, Molex, and the USB type. The cylindrical connector is the most common one in laptops
