Improve Performance With SIMM 64 MB RAM

Random access memory, or RAM, is the engine of your computer. It's what helps it process the different application and programs you use. But sometimes the amount of RAM on your computer simply isn't enough. It might be good to install some additional RAM to help achieve maximum performance. One thing you can do is add 64 MB RAM to boost performance.

Wait, I Thought GB Were the Norm?

Seeing MB instead of GB might throw you off a bit. It's been a while since memory was measured in megabytes (MB). So if 1 GB is equal to 1,000 MB, why would you want only 64 MB of RAM?

  • Older computers, those dating from the late 1990s and early 2000s, often only came with 32 MB RAM, meaning an upgrade to 64 would double its computing power. If you like to play old video games, or have an older computer you like but don't want to get rid of, even just this small increase in memory can dramatically alter your device's performance.
  • Along the same lines, adding 64 MB RAM to a device with 64 or 128 can provide a significant performance boost

What Is SIMM?

When you buy memory in this small of a quantity, it's typically made using SIMM technology. But what is this and what does it mean?

  • SIMM stands for Single Inline Memory Module, and it refers to the technology used for memory during the 1980s and 1990s
  • SIMM preceded DIMM: Dual Inline Memory Module.
  • SIMMs were designed to help save motherboard space. The contacts on both sides of SIMMs are identical, making it easier to increase the amount of memory in a computer.
  • Because of the different format, SIMMs can only be installed in computer dating back to the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s.

How Many Pins Do I Need?

When you start looking at which memory module to buy, you'll need to decide how many pins you want. Your decision will depend ultimately on what you want to get from your new RAM.

  • Pins help determine the amount of address lines in your RAM unit
  • There are two versions: 30-pin and 72-pin. Because they allow fewer address lines, 30-pin units have a maximum memory capacity of 16 MB. So if you want to add 64 GB of RAM, you would need 4 units.
  • On the other hand, 72-pin units have more address lines and therefore more capacity. These units can hold up to 128 MB.
