Multitask Efficiently with PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 8GB Computer RAM

How well your computer performs depends on many factors, and random-access memory (RAM) is one of them. If your computer does not have enough RAM, then it will struggle to keep up with multiple programs running simultaneously, causing bottlenecks in the performance that constrain your computer's processor as it tries to find the memory to process data. Using DDR3 memory like PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 8GB computer RAM is a way to improve performance by increasing memory speed.

What is RAM?

RAM, also known as simple memory, is responsible for holding data that the computer's processor may need for the task it is performing. The reason that RAM like that of PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 8GB RAM is used for this task as opposed to the computer's hard drive, which is substantially larger and holds the vast majority of the data the computer has, is because of speed. The hard disk drive in most computers is made up of a spinning disc, much like a DVD, and a read/write head that moves back and forth above the disk to read and write data to it. While this is a simple and convenient way of storing data, it is not particularly fast. The difference with memory is that it uses a different type of data storage technology, which does not use any moving parts and makes it fast. In fact, the computer is able to access anything stored in memory nearly instantaneously.

What types of RAM are there?

There are several types of memory available as developments are made to keep up with the ever-changing needs of consumers and the capabilities of other computer components.

  • SDRAM: Synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) is a type of memory that was designed as an upgrade to classic memory technologies. The benefit of SDRAM was that it could reach triple the speed that previous technologies had been capable of as high as 180 MHz. However, as technology continued to improve, this was not able to keep up with advanced processors.
  • DDR: Double data rate (DDR) memory is able to transfer data at twice the rate as SDRAM because it transfers on both the up and downside of the clock cycle. Because it is able to perform an operation on both the upside and the downside, DDR memory is able to take what would have been memory running at 166MHz and double its effective speed to 333MHz.

What are parity chips?

Parity chips are an additional component installed on some memory modules, which check the memory for errors. If there is an error, they are not there to fix it but may help you diagnose the problem and solve it after rebooting. There is a second level of redundancy that is available for some types of memory known as error-correcting code (ECC). ECC is a form of memory redundancy that can be built into a memory module to deal with memory errors. If the module didn't have these chips installed and an error occurs in the data that is stored in the RAM, then the computer is likely to crash and the user may have no way of knowing what caused the crash or how to fix it. ECC chips will make an attempt to correct the problem before the computer crashes, which can help protect against hardware or software damage caused by a crash.
