Choosing the Right USB Hub

When you need to connect more than one device to the USB port on your desktop or laptop simultaneously, a USB hub comes in handy. Also referred to as a splitter box, this device expands the connection to the host system by increasing the number of ports. It works similarly to a local area network (LAN) port where the endpoint is given an address and the hub sends requests from the main host. It is connected via a cable which can vary in length. eBay offers a variety of Belkin splitter boxes for you to choose from.

What are the types of interfaces?

The two common types of interfaces are the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. They differ in their features as follows:

  • USB 2.0 - This is the earlier interface. With this type of port, a splitter box transfers data at a speed of up to 480 Mbps and can deliver up to a maximum of 500mA.
  • USB 3.0 - A splitter box with this kind of interface can transmit data with at a speed of 4.8 Gbps, making it much faster. It is also more power efficient delivering up to 900mA.

How do the Belkin splitter boxes power?

Belkin hubs are of two main types based on how they draw power. These include the following:

  • Powered - These are active hubs that draw a charge from an electric wall outlet through an AC adapter. Since they provide their own power, you can connect to as many devices as possible without having any incompatibility issues.
  • Non-powered - This kind of hub does not require an external power supply as it is charged by the main computer to which it is connected. They may however not be compatible with peripheral devices that require high power. When choosing this type, USB 3.0 hubs stand as the better option because they have improved power management capabilities over their 2.0 counterparts. You can choose between the three- and four-port hubs available.

What else should you look out for when getting a splitter box?

Besides the interface and how they are powered, you should consider the following when getting a splitter box:

  • Number of ports - If you intend to use it for a number of devices, then you should consider choosing one with as many ports. Belkin splitter boxes are available in three-port, four-port, and all the way up to seven-port options. With the slots, you can connect to printers, keyboards, phones or hard drives and even use them for charging.
  • Construction - Choose a hub made from a sturdy material, such as aluminum, for impact resistance and durability purposes
  • Add-ons - The splitter boxes may come with an attached gigabit ethernet adapter or may come without, requiring you to get the cable separately.
