A Buyer's Guide to Choosing a Docking Station for HP ProBook

A docking station allows you to connect your laptop computer to external devices in a way that mimics what a desktop computer can do. You could set it up to use a larger monitor, connect it to speakers or other devices while at work, and disconnect from the dock while traveling. There are many features and functions available in a docking station for HP ProBook laptop computers.

Some of the available features include:

• Built-in adapter: The dock may have a built-in adapter for charging the laptop while it is hooked up to the port.
• Hot and cold docking functions: The docking station may allow you to dock the laptop while it is on or off, which is referred to as, respectively, hot or cold.
• Separate power and connectivity functions: Docking the laptop into the station may allow you to use the dock's controls for power, internet connectivity, Wi-Fi access, and working offline.

These docking stations will charge your computer's battery when the AC adapter is connected to the station with one cable and the other cable is plugged into a wall outlet. The amount of time that it takes the station to charge a computer's battery ranges from two to four hours.

The docking stations can accept 120 to 240 volts of AC power from a regular wall outlet when plugged in on their own or with an AC transformer. Either the transformer or the station itself converts the AC power into the DC power that is required by the laptop. It then delivers 18.5 to 21 volts of DC power to the laptop for powering it directly or for charging its battery.

To dock a computer into the station, determine which type of connectivity the station uses for communicating with the computer. The available options include the use of an AC transformer, a USB 1.0 or USB 2.0 cable, or an Ethernet or parallel cable. Place the computer into the station securely. Connect any desired peripheral devices to the station. Some stations require the use of drivers or software for the setup process the first time they are used. These may be available on a compact disc or through the manufacturer's website. The computer can be removed from the station when a full charge of the battery is attained or when you need to travel. Disconnecting the computer from the station begins to use stored power from the laptop's battery.
