How to Shop for Gold Curtains, Drapes, and Valances

An interesting and slightly uncommon color, outfitting your room with gold window curtains and curtain panels can bring both coolness and warmth to a room, depending on the layout. If you've decided on gold as your accent decor, there are many different types of solid and patterned window treatments and valances that are sure to make your room come alive and pop with color.

How to Match Gold with Your Decor

Gold window treatments and rugs are sometimes the last step and are placed even after the furniture is added. As this is the final touch that polishes off the room, how you set the tone with your curtain panels (and rugs) is important. Some things to keep in mind:

  • Dark gold curtains make a room feel more cozy. If you are considering a darkly hued gold, this will have a tendency to make the room look smaller and more intimate. This may be the perfect touch for the master bedroom.
  • Light gold curtain panels open up a space. If you're embellishing in an area that's short on floor space, choose lightly colored curtains and panels to make the room have a more wide-open feel.
  • Avoid using patterns in both curtains and rugs. As you're likely working on both, either choose a patterned rug and solid curtains, or a solid (or two-tone) rug and patterned curtains. Two solids for window curtains are okay but two separate patterns may make the room look too busy. Small, embroidered patterns near the grommet on window curtains is also a workable consideration.
  • White always works for a window. If you're unsure about the color but love a nice gold trim, opt for a pair of white window curtains or a panel with gold embellishments, grommets, embroidery or trim to see how it works in the space.

What Are Differences in Gold Window Curtains and Treatments?

When it comes to shopping for curtains, panels and blinds, it's good to know the difference so you purchase the right thing for the space. The terms curtains and drapes, in fact, are not interchangeable.

  • Drapes are often made of a thicker fabric and provide more privacy for the room.
  • Curtains are more sheer pieces used as window treatments.
  • A curtain panel may refer to one part of window curtains. For example, most windows use two sheer panels for coverage.
  • A valance is a covering often with a thick grommet that provides the window with little coverage but is used as a decorative accent.

How Do I Decide Thickness and Material for Window Curtain Panels?

Window curtains are both decorative and useful, and the material that you choose for your curtain panels has a lot to do with how much coverage you get. As you're shopping, consider:

  • Sheer: Sheer curtains provide little to no coverage, even though they technically cover the window. If you like the look of sheer but need coverage, consider pairing them with a blind or shade. Sheer materials include linen, cotton, polyester and silk. Make sure that sheer curtains have a durable grommet.
  • Gold blackout curtains: Blackout curtains provide the ultimate in protection, and block out light and UV rays. Find these in velvet, linen, cotton and other choices. You can often add and remove a blackout curtain panel, offering coverage just some seasons out of the year.
  • Drapes. These are not quite see-through but aren't blackout either. Look for drapes made of silk, cotton and linen, to provide medium protection.
