Stay Up and Running With a Universal Laptop Charger

There's nothing worse than having your laptop charger break. Although most laptops can run for more than four hours without a charge, this is hardly enough. And with each laptop being a little different, it might be confusing to find one that works for your device, even if you're using a well-known one like an HP laptop. Fortunately, there are universal chargers that make it much simpler for you to stay up and running.

What Does Universal Mean?

There's a saying that what seems too good to be true probably is. Nothing can ever be truly universal, but technology can get close.

  • Some universal chargers, whether from HP or another brand, work on only one specific make or model. Make sure your computer works with the brand of power adapter you're looking at.
  • If you need something that works for all different laptops and notebooks, you can buy a universal adapter that comes with multiple power cords. The AC adapter is always the same, but each cord will be different so that you can charge the battery in your specific device.
  • If you travel overseas, you may need different plugs. Europe uses different configurations for their AC power than the United States, so make sure you have the right one for your charger, and make sure your power adapter can handle the electric current of the country where you're traveling.

What Should I Look for in a Universal Charger?

The most obvious factor to consider is if the charger fits your laptop. But besides that, what else should you keep in mind?

  • Make sure the adapter can provide enough power. Some batteries need more to charge, and others need less. Having too much power can damage the battery, whereas not enough can make charging take a while or be impossible.
  • Make sure the AC Adapter is sufficient. The power that comes out of the wall is not always the same amount your laptop needs. A good power adapter can handle the AC current coming from the wall and convert it into the right amount of power for your device. Typical power adapters can handle up to 240V of power, and they usually only allow out 20 to 40V, depending on what you need.
