Oil Lamp Burner

Lamps that run on fuel oil were used in the previous centuries for lighting. The burner of the lamp burns the oil inside of it to light the wick. Although electrical lights replaced them, some homes still use wick lamps, often for decoration, as emergency supplies, or for camping.

What are the different types of lamp burners?

Oil lamps range from antique lanterns and lamps to mid-century and contemporary lighting and decor designs. The burners can vary in size, shape, and how they operate. Some variations of these are:

  • Burning Fluid -This has tapered tubes for the wick going upward away from the lamp.
  • Prong - A prong style has decorative brass prongs that grip the chimney.
  • Coronet - This type has a circular gallery to hold the chimney in place.
  • Argand - This variety has combustion air entering it from the sides and going up to the flame.
  • Central draft - This type has a central air tube with a round wick.
What materials are burners made of?

Burners are often made of steel, brass, and sometimes pewter. Other metals, including bronze, iron, zinc, and nickel, were used for the making of antique products. Some have a decorative finish to them. There are also oil burners made from Mason jars.

How do you clean and maintain your lamp burner?

The vent holes of the burner must be kept clean and the vent safety feature must be free from obstruction. Regular wiping and dusting are required to keep the burner clean. Here is a general rundown of how to clean most types of oil burners:

  1. Disassemble the parts and rinse the burner with water.
  2. Soak the burner with a solution of equal parts salt and vinegar, then scrub it gently with a sponge or a brillo pad. Clean it again with a hot water with some soap inside. To keep a brass metal clean, leave tomato sauce or paste on the surface and leave it for an hour. Rinse and dry it with a towel.
  3. Use a blow dryer for the inside spaces. You can polish the brass with a metal polish to keep dirt away. Lacquer can also be applied to the surface to finish the surface and protect it from dirt and grease.
  4. When putting it back on, make sure the collar fits tightly to the main body.
What are lamp chimneys?

Chimneys are the glass parts above the burner. The flame burns inside of them from the wick extending through the burner, and they are transparent so the light shines through them. Sometimes different colors of glass are used, and the shapes of chimneys may vary significantly.
