A Guide to Picking the Right Computer Power Cables

It is easy to overlook the power cable you use for your computer. After all, it mainly comes as an added accessory when you are buying a new computer. The trouble begins when your computer won't power up because of a damaged power cord. You might have to go through dozens of cords before you finally find the perfect match for your computer.

How does a power cable work?

A power cord gives the connection needed to light up your computer system from the power source. The cables plug into your monitor, printer, system unit, and other electric components.

What are are the qualities of a good power cord?

Buying a cable for your PC is not a complex process. But, if you ignore some of these steps, you might end up in a perpetual cable buying cycle.

  • Length - The cable should easily reach the height of your workstation. It should not stretch too much or hang very loosely. Ideally, it is better to have one that is too long rather than too short. Power cables range from anything between 1.5 feet up to 7 feet long.
  • Voltage - Power-related issues form the greatest bulk of AC power cord failure. Make sure that the cable meets the required power threshold. I-Sheng electric wires have a voltage capacity of about 125-250 volts. Always check the manufacturer's indicated voltage threshold before buying.
  • Connector - The connector port of the cable should fit the corresponding port on your PC. When buying Kettle type cable for a desktop PC, always check the connector type to make sure that it will go into the PC. There is usually a mix-up between the male and female connector ports.
  • Flexibility - The cable might have to go through a few bends before making the connection. It is only right that you get a cable which could easily bend without breaking or tearing.
  • Approval standards - The International Electrical Commission has in place strict safety and quality standards relating to the design and manufacture of power cords. You will almost never go wrong with an IEC certified, heavy-duty AC power cord.

Which power cord should I use on my computer?

  • LCD/Computer monitor power cords connect power to your monitor or LCD screen.
  • Two-prong power cords have two connections that run into the power source; the live connection and the neutral connection.
  • In addition to the two connection mentioned above, three-prong power cords have an extra grounding connection.
  • An AC Laptop adapter cable is a dedicated power cord for computer laptops. There are different models suited for different laptop brands.
