What is a Camcorder?

A camcorder (camera recorder) is a small portable electronic device that is capable of shooting live motion video and audio. You can then playback these audio or videos later.

A camcorder is made up of three components:

  • A lens that gathers and concentrates light.
  • An imager that converts light into electrical signals
  • A recorder that converts the electrical signals into digital audio and video and encodes them for storage

There are both digital and analog camcorders but as expected the digital ones are better. The early models of camcorders lost quality with aging and would produce grainy images.

What are some of the types of camcorders?

There are various types of camcorders from different manufacturers. One of them is JVC. There are some that are waterproof, dustproof, and even shockproof.

  • Mini-DV camcorders - This is very popular with documentary filmmakers. They are relatively cheaper and you can easily get the tapes. The digital video tapes capture footage with little or no compression hence the video quality is still good. Besides, this video camera comes with a hand strap and a five-hour battery to make it easy to hold while shooting videos for long hours.
  • Hard Disk Drive camcorders - In these types of video cameras, the hard drive is built into the camera just like a computer. HDD cameras are available in both standard and high definition. An example is the JVC Everio R dustproof and waterproof camcorder or the JVC GZHM450 camcorder with 40x optical zoom. The latter also has a touchscreen, high-low light performance, and a viewfinder to get clear shots.
  • Flash memory camcorders - This is an example of a full HD camcorder. With these, the footage is stored on flash memory drives. They are small cameras with a quad-proof design that makes them comfortable to grip. The battery and other parts are not movable making it less susceptible to damage thanks to the compact design.
  • Combo model - This gives you a combination of both worlds. Not only does it have a removable flash drive, but it also a built-in hard drive. This gives you the ultimate flexibility. In case your internal drive is full before you can export them to a computer, you can use a removable memory card.

What do I consider when buying a camcorder?

There are some considerations you should make before buying a camcorder. For example, are you going to shoot skits, shoot movies or professional films? Different settings require types of cameras.

  • Video quality - Some camcorders offer 720p video recording while others have a higher one s such as a 1080p video recording.
  • Lenses - Different camcorders have varying zoom lenses. Unlike cameras, the zoom levels in a camcorder are much higher and they do not pick up the image noise.
  • Ergonomics - You should consider how the camcorder is designed as this will affect how well you can handle it. For instance, those with a quad-proof design and with rotatable LCD screens are ideal since you can get perfect viewing angles. Some even have back-illuminated sensors for higher low light sensitivity besides being freezeproof so they can withstand even the harshest temperatures. The creative design has given rise to waterproof camcorders with underwater capabilities.
