RAM for Desktop and Laptop Computers

When you need more memory for your laptop or desktop computer, there is no shortage of manufacturers to choose from. In fact, advances in technology and so much competition has driven down the price of computer memory over the years. To ensure you are getting a reliable product, make sure you purchase from a company that does extensive testing of each component before it ships. Kingston, for example, conducts at least seven different tests before shipping its computer memory.

What Is RAM?

RAM stands for Random Access Memory and is one of the most important components in a computer. The more you have, the more data your computer can process at any given time. Whereas hard drives store data while it is not in use, RAM is used to actually work with the data.

How Do You Know How Much RAM You Need?

Ideally, you want enough RAM to run your computer's operating system and all of the applications you're likely to use at any given time. Typically, a computer's operating system requires the most memory. Web browsing and some computer games may also require a lot of memory. Whereas a simple Word document would require little memory, a complicated Photoshop file would require a lot more. Fortunately, memory modules make it relatively easy to upgrade RAM at anytime.

What are Some Laptop RAM Considerations?

  • Most laptops come with 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB of RAM, although some designed for gaming have up to 32GB.
  • For simple word processing and email, 4GB of memory should be sufficient.
  • If you are planning to do any graphics work or stream videos, start with at least 8GB of memory.
  • Serious gamers may want to start with 16MB of memory.
  • With some laptops, upgrading RAM later can be tricky, so it is good to buy what you think you will need at the start.

What About Desktop RAM Considerations?

  • Desktops tend to be used for more complicated tasks than laptops, so 8GB of RAM is good place to start.
  • Whether crunching numbers and creating charts for business or relaxing with a video game, 16GB of RAM is safe starting point.
  • If you plan to edit large video files or process huge data sets, 32GB of RAM is suggested.
  • It is typically easier to install more memory in a desktop than a laptop, which makes it easier to upgrade later.
  • Having more memory than you need does not result in better performance, so it might be better to spend that money on other important components, such as a better graphics card.
