Motorcycle Throttle and Choke Cables for Honda Magna 700

Motorcycle owners know that their biggest responsibility is in properly maintaining their bikes to keep them running smoothly and safely. The throttle and choke cables on your Honda Magna 700 are crucial to its operation, and when they are worn or damaged, they should be immediately replaced. Throttle and choke replacement cables are available, some with enhancements or features, that get your motorcycle up and running for a smooth, safe ride.

How do motorcycle throttle cables work on the Magna?

The throttle cable is the part that standard motorcycles use for propulsion control. Two steel cables run from the grip of the throttle to the bikes engine, similar to the brake line, making up the throttle cables. They open and close the throttle valve on the carburetor. Used like the gas pedal to accelerate a car, there are two cables: a front cable and an idle-hand cable. When they arent working properly or break, acceleration is limited or not possible.

How do motorcycle choke cables work?

The choke cable of your Honda Magna connects the choke knob, located close to the motor, to the carburetor. This allows you to change the strength of your fuel mix to adjust the engine to whatever condition you need to navigate.

How do you replace the throttle cables?
  • Preparation: Work in adequate light so that you can see all of the components clearly. Make sure your Honda is completely stationary before you begin with the handlebars turned to the side where the throttle cable is situated. Make sure you allow plenty of slack.
  • Remove the current cables: Using a socket wrench or another appropriate tool, release the bolt on the handlebars cable assembly. Open the assembly, and unhook the cable from within the housing. This can be a complex step that will take time because of the various clips and rings you’ll have to remove before you can free the cable at the other end. Pull the cable through as much as you can until you meet any obstructions, and then remove them. Once youve made it to the other end of the cable, unhook it from its housing. You can probably use the same wrench or tool you used at the front of the bike. Remove the entire cable housing from your bike in preparation for the new cables.
  • Replacement: With the new cable, start where you ended. At the rear housing, attach the same bolt that secured the old cable. Secure the housing properly, ensuring everything is tightened up. Using the same route as the old cable, thread the new cable through until it reaches the handlebars at the front. Youll run into the same obstructions as before. Work in reverse, and take advantage of the opportunity to replace any fittings.
  • Finishing up: Once youve gotten the new cable through to the handlebars, attach it to the housing there. The slack should be the same as the old cable. Secure the housing into place, making sure its properly tightened. Straighten out the handlebars, and make any small adjustments necessary. Start your Honda, and test your throttle cable, ensuring it functions correctly.
