Make Your Internet Connection More Accessible With a NETGEAR Wi-Fi Extender

Wi-Fi extenders are impressive little devices that connect wirelessly to your router and help to extend the range abilities of your wireless router. These range extenders repeat the Wi-Fi signal so that you can get wireless internet in hard-to-reach places in your home or business. When you're looking to purchase a NETGEAR range extender, there are a few things you can keep in mind to make the selection process a whole lot simpler.

How does a range extender and router combo work?

Essentially, your Wi-Fi router produces radio waves that function similarly to sound waves. They are emitted from your wireless router in specified strengths and can travel throughout your home and business where they are picked up by your wireless devices. A Wi-Fi router receives network signal, decodes the signal, and then forwards it.

Computers and cell phones have wireless adapters. These adapters receive the Wi-Fi signal and translate the data. Your range extender is there to extend your Wi-Fi signal. It connects wirelessly to your Wi-Fi router and then repeats the signal so that it can "echo" throughout an area. This makes it easier for your devices to connect from longer distances. These extenders are ideal for large spaces or areas where walls or other obstructions may be blocking your wireless signal.

Where should you put your Wi-Fi range extender?

It's important to install your extender in the right location in your home or business. Knowing the best location for your extender will help you obtain a better and stronger signal. Ideally, the extender should be about half-way between your Wi-Fi main router and the stationary devices you own that use a wireless signal.

Know which device needs a stronger Wi-Fi signal and find the halfway point between your router and said device. For instance, if your router is in the den and your computer is upstairs in a bedroom the halfway point for you may be in an upstairs hallway or in your kitchen. The halfway point will depend heavily on the layout of your home or business. Remember, the wireless extender has to stay in range of the router. If the range is not exactly halfway to your device, that's fine. Simply get as close to your device as possible without going out of your router's range.

How do you hook up a wireless extender?

There are a few simple steps to take when installing a NETGEAR Wi-Fi range extender. These steps are generally the same for all extenders:

  • Step 1: Plug your extender into a computer by connecting an ethernet cable to one of the extender's ethernet ports.
  • Step 2: On your computer, log in to the user interface. Your username and password should be included in the packaging of the extender you purchase. In many cases, the username will be "admin" and the password will be "password."
  • Step 3: After you're logged in, click setup and then go to wireless settings.
  • Step 4: Get your Network Key or Wi-Fi password and enter it under security options. Be sure your wireless extender and router passwords match. If they don't match, then make them the same and click Apply.
  • Step 5: Connect your devices to the Wi-Fi extender.
