Introducing (and Reintroducing) the Nike Air Raid
The Nike Air Raid, released in 1992, was designed specifically for outdoor basketball on asphalt playgrounds and was created as an answer to Reebok's Blacktop outdoor basketball shoe line. Since its debut, it's been re-released several times and in updated colorways. Its most recent release was in 2020.
Rugged Outdoor Design of the Nike Air Raid
The Nike Air Raid was created by Tinker Hatfield, who also designed Nike sneakers for the Nike Air Max and Air Jordan lines. One of the Nike Air Raid's distinct callouts is its canvas straps on the upper. Hatfield designed these Velcro straps for stability and to mimic the act of strapping up for battle in a war.
The sneaker also features nylon panels on the sides for breathability and hard rubber outriggers on the midsole for extra protection. A Nike Air cushioning unit inside the midsole offers supreme comfort. The words "For Outdoor Use Only" are imprinted on the outsole, a nod to the sneaker's durability and intentional use on asphalt.
Nike Air "Fear of God" Raid
When Fear of God streetwear designer Jerry Lorenzo collaborated with Nike on a collection of shoes and apparel, he chose the Nike Air Raid as one of the bases for his design. The result was the Nike Air Fear of God Raid. The sneaker utilized the original Nike Air Raid's nostalgia and blended it with modern aesthetics and technology. It also featured similar cross straps and a wide toebox found on the Nike Air Raid.
What strayed from the original was a visible Nike Air Unit and lack of a hard rubber outsole made "for outdoor use." The upper materials on the Nike Air Fear of God Raid also featured luxury leathers and textiles for a softer feel than the original.
The design was topped off by Air Fear of God branding on the sock liner and came in colorways such as Black/Black-Fossil (AT8087-002), Light Bone (AT8087-001) and Black/Medium Grey-White (AT8087-003). Its original retail price was $190, and resale values typically range anywhere from $100 to $320 and sometimes more depending on size, colorway and condition.
Nike Air Raid Cultural Moments
Original advertising from 1992 for the Nike Air Raid featured Spike Lee. The commercial, titled "Urban Jungle Gym," showcased NBA player Tim Hardaway and Spike Lee in the shoes on a colorful outdoor basketball court inspired by one of the Nike Air Raid's colorways.
Spike Lee's film Malcolm X also came out that same year, which correlated with the director wearing caps with the letter X. This translated to the Nike Air Raid's X patterned canvas strap design on the upper. The film director was the de facto representative for the Nike Air Raid and helped bring the sneaker to the forefront by being photographed in the shoes and appearing in Nike Air Raid marketing campaigns. Lee was also integral in original Air Jordan ads with Michael Jordan dubbed "Spike and Mike."
Colorways, Collabs and Collectibility of the Nike Air Raid
The original colorway of the Nike Air Raid was Black/Grey (DC1412-001). It was last retroed in 2020. Its original retail price was $140, and the resale value of the 2020 version can fetch close to $300 on eBay.
Another original colorway of the Nike Air Raid was Dark Grey/Multicolor (DC1494-001), also known as Peace or Urban Jungle. The nickname of the colorway refers to the original 1992 advertisements featuring Spike Lee that are referenced on the sneaker's midsole and the peace sign found on the strap. The sneaker's resale value can top $400 on eBay, depending on size and condition.

The Nike Air Raid has also been updated over the years with new colorways and used for special collaborations. French label Pigalle collaborated with Nike on two versions of the Nike Air Raid in 2014. They featured luxurious leather on the uppers, hits of Pigalle branding and monochromatic color schemes in Purple Shade (729371-500) and White/White (729371-100). These versions' resale values can range from around $450 to $1000, depending on the size, colorway and condition. A Metallic Gold/White (642330-700) version of the sneaker was also released in 2014. It typically sells for less than its original retail of $125. The Nike Air Raid was recently included in a pack of basketball sneakers themed around the Roswell Rayguns in a Black/Orange-White (DD9222-001) color scheme. It can fetch a little more than its original retail price of $145.
