Warhammer Fantasy Battle Starter Sets

Deep in the forests of the Old World lie the battlefields where the armies of Sigmar prove their mettle against the Orcs in the eternal battle to hold back the Chaos Gods. Warhammer Fantasy is a tabletop setting that has been part of the wargaming and role-playing worlds for decades. Devoted fans field armies of painstakingly painted miniatures in a war for tabletop domination. The dark and gritty Warhammer world is the perfect backdrop for fantasy wars where new players and old can match their skills in Warhammer battle. The most recent incarnation is Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

What is a Starter Set?

A Warhammer Starter Set provides you with all you need to get started to field your own army of warriors in the world of Warhammer. It includes models from two armies, basic rules, warscrolls with the army-specific rules for particular models, and dice. Some even include a mat you can use to stage your battles. It's a complete introduction to the tabletop game. You don't have to field only human or Orc warriors in your Warhammer game there are a whole host of other races and armies to choose from including:

  • Elves: The High Elves and Dark Elves of previous editions of the game have become Aelfs.
  • Dwarfs: Stout warriors, the Dwarfs of Warhammer fantasy field steampunk weapons to destroy their enemies.
  • Skaven: Intelligent yet diseased rat-creatures the Skaven seek to spread plague and pestilence across the world.

What Makes Warhammer So Appealing?

There are a number of factors that make Games Workshop's tabletop battle games so appealing to players and keep people coming back again and again to their world:

  • Tone: Rather than pure Tolkienesque high fantasy, the Old World is one of Vampire Counts, Witch Hunters, and Daemons. Elector Counts can try to control Bretonnia and drive Chaos Lizardmen from the walls of Mordheim. The darkness is built into the setting in a way that makes the idea of battles inevitable.
  • Miniatures: Like many successful games, Warhammer draws on the desire to collect. Every unit you field has to be physically on the table from Dwarfs to Dark Elves. Each race and faction has an army book so you can field any in-universe force or create your own completely non-canon horde, as long as you have the miniatures to field it.

Old vs. New Starter Sets

While the Age of Sigmar has led to an all-new world with new factions and new armies, you can still play with the older forces from before the End Times. The game is Fantasy. Pit Daemons and Dwarfs against Bretonnians if you want; you can have Lizardmen face off against High Elves. Ulthuan and Naggaroth may no longer be home to Elves in the official setting, but you can use them to field your own battles and play your own wargames.
