The History of adidas Ultraboost 4.0

adidas Ultraboost 4.0

When adidas launched the Boost cushioning system in 2015, the brand focused on the running community. Not only did runners embrace the new technology, but lifestyle and fashion fans took to the look of the Boost midsole, pushing Boost to the forefront of nearly every adidas conversation. As adidas continued to refine its Boost technology, the Ultraboost silhouette evolved toward the November 2017 launch of the Ultraboost 4.0, the fourth iteration of the Boost running profile. The Ultraboost 4.0 brought a variety of colorways, particularly in 2018, and remains a staple of the adidas catalog years later.

adidas Ultraboost 4.0 Features and Design

The Ultraboost 4.0 is all about the Boost — it isn't just a clever name, after all. The cushioning system that adidas created in cooperation with BASF offers runners a high level of step-in comfort and provides lasting energy return. Boost's plush comfort quickly became attractive to non-runners wanting an everyday shoe.

By pairing a Primeknit upper and a stripped-down support cage with the Boost, the Ultraboost model featured a minimalist aesthetic, high breathability and sleek design. Partnering with Continental, adidas created a rubber outsole with durability in mind. They could color the Primeknit yarn in various ways, allowing for solid colors, bold patterns or even wild multicolor designs. The combination of performance and style means the Ultraboost has been used to win high-level marathons but is often seen more regularly on streets and sidewalks in the urban environment.

Collectibility and Value of the adidas Ultraboost 4.0

The Ultraboost 4.0 sold initially for $180 to over $200, depending on the style and collaboration. The resale market for more popular Ultraboost 4.0 designs, like BAPE and Game of Thrones White Walkers, runs higher, with prices topping $400.

The next level down, including colorways like Triple Black, Targaryen Dragons, Madness, Seoul 1988, Chalk Grey, Breast Cancer Awareness and Cashmere Wool, can all command triple digits on the resale market.

adidas Ultraboost 4.0 Colorway Releases

  • Even with a release at the tail end of 2017, adidas was quick to produce a variety of colorways of the Ultraboost 4.0 before 2018 arrived. And they didn't stop there. The Core Black (BB6166) served as a quintessential Ultraboost release, using black Primeknit and a black outsole. But it's the Triple Black release (BB6171) that turned the historically white Boost material into an all-black take on the Ultraboost model. These late 2017 releases were some of the first that excited fans of the model.
  • An early adidas Consortium collaboration for the Ultraboost 4.0 saw A Ma Maniere of Atlanta work with Invincible of Taiwan for an all-white Cashmere Wool edition (CM7880). The sneaker has the Triple White appearance but includes kicked-up materials on the upper and features a leather tongue with branding from the two designers.
  • Just in time for spring 2018, the Cookies and Cream release of the Ultraboost 4.0 — dubbed Oreo (BB6180) — uses a black Boost midsole atop a Continental outsole and then goes multi-tone in black, white and grey for the Primeknit upper. Speckling on the laces keeps with the Cookies and Cream motif.

  • The pink accents offer the Breast Cancer Awareness edition (BC0247) its namesake touch. Released in September 2018, the most popular version offers black with pink branding and a pink Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon on the back heel.
  • In February 2019, adidas and BAPE collaborated on an Ultraboost 4.0, offering up a Camo version. Designed in both Green Camo (F35097) and Black Camo (G54784), the Primeknit upper creates a more traditional camo pattern and uses white adidas stripes and then black for the Boost material and outsole.
  • adidas continued the collaborations with BAPE, creating a pair of Game of Thrones-inspired designs for March 2019. White Walkers (EE3708) features the upper, Boost and outsole all in white. The upper has plenty of blue accents, and the three stripes come in black. But white isn't the only option for Game of Thrones fans. The Targaryen Dragons version (EE3709) uses black across the entire shoe with multicolor accents throughout the Primeknit upper.
  • A variety of other colorways continued to excite fans in 2018 and 2019. The simplistic Chalk Grey (BB6177), colorful Seoul 1988 (EE7150/FV8100), black Madness (EF0144) and rich Mocha (BB6170) release all gave a fresh perspective to the Ultraboost 4.0.

The adidas Ultraboost 4.0 in Culture

Kanye West, wearing a Triple White version of Ultraboost, gave the adidas silhouette instant pop culture credibility. The 4.0 version capitalized on that prominence, pushing the adidas Ultraboost into celebrity status.
